The Anat Baniel Method®/ NeuroMovement®

The Anat Baniel Method, also known as NeuroMovement, is a movement-based approach that harnesses the brain's natural ability to change and adapt. Developed by Anat Baniel, this method utilizes gentle, focused movements to stimulate the brain and nervous system, leading to improved physical, emotional, and cognitive function.

Key principles of the Anat Baniel Method:

  • Neuroplasticity: The method leverages the brain's capacity to form new neural connections throughout life.

  • Sensory Awareness: It emphasizes heightened awareness of bodily sensations and movement.

  • Gentle, Focused Movements: The movements are designed to be gentle and precise, allowing for optimal brain engagement.

  • Nine Essentials: These fundamental principles guide the practice, including attention, curiosity, and presence.

I highly recommend ordering Anat Baniel's book, Kids Beyond Limits. It is an excellent introduction to her work with children with special needs. She also wrote Move Into Life, geared toward adults and achieving lifelong vitality.

Movement Lesson (ML)

Movement Lesson is a powerful program that helps empower parents and caregivers to work with their children at home.

Movement Lesson is a therapeutic approach that optimizes an individual's movements through gentle, rotational touch. It's particularly beneficial for newborns, children, and adults who might struggle initiating, stimulating, or enhancing their functional movements.

Key aspects of Movement Lesson:

  • Gentle, rotational touch: The method involves applying gentle, rotational movements to the body to stimulate and improve movement patterns.

  • Assessment of movement weaknesses: Practitioners assess an individual's movement capabilities to identify areas where support is needed.

  • Initiation, stimulation, and enhancement: The approach aims to initiate movement in individuals who may struggle to do so independently, stimulate existing movement patterns, and enhance overall movement quality.

  • Focus on functional development: Movement Lesson helps individuals develop functional movements that are essential for daily activities and overall well-being.

Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a therapeutic intervention that uses filtered music to help people regulate their nervous system and improve social communication:

  • How it's delivered:

A certified provider guides the participant through the SSP, recommending an individualized listening plan. The provider monitors the participant's progress and adjusts the pace as needed.

  • How much to listen:

The original recommendation was to listen to one hour of filtered music each day for five days. However, the current recommendation is to try 10–15 minute segments, with breaks between listening days. Some people may need to listen to as little as 30 seconds at a time.

  • How it works:

The SSP uses specially filtered music to train the brain to focus on the frequency                range of human speech. This stimulates the vagus nerve, which calms the nervous            system and helps people feel more safe and calm.

  • Benefits

    The SSP can help with:

    • Improving human speech processing

    • Supporting emotional regulation

    • Enhancing social engagement and resilience

    • Addressing dysregulation caused by sensory processing disorders, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorders

    • Reducing auditory hypersensitivity

The SSP was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, an internationally renowned trauma researcher and neuroscientist. It's based on his Polyvagal Theory.
